Amazon’s original proposal for television rights to JRR
Scenario
The epic drama, set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings , follows a group of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront a terrifying reemergence of evil in Middle-earth. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power features a cast and several actors who have completely transformed for their roles.
Early proposed ideas included prequels featuring characters like Aragorn, Gimli, and Gandalf, but the showrunners preferred to focus on important, untold events from the novels
Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings novels was to make the series a new adaptation of the latter (essentially a retelling of Gospodara prstenova: Prstenova družina (2001), Gospodar prstenova: Dvije kule (2002), and Gospodar prstenova: Povratak kralja (2003)), but the Tolkien estate turned it down. Amazon eventually acquired the rights on the condition that the series would be different from Peter Jackson’s previous adaptations and could not contradict anything Tolkien had previously written. news rather than simple side stories, so they agreed with the studio that the series would be set during the Second Age of the books.
The “Music of the Ainur” creation myth from Tolkien’s JRR
Since they did not have the rights to The Silmarillion, Tolkien’s Unfinished Tales, and The History of Middle-earth (which explores the First and Second Ages), they examined The Lord of the Rings novels and appendices for passages and references to the Second Age in which to set their story. They consulted with the estate and several experts in Tolkien’s knowledge (including his nephew and novelist Simon Tolkien) about including new characters and plot elements. The subtitles in several languages incorrectly refer to King Durin III as “Durin II”.
in The Critical Drunkard: The Rings of Power – The Fandom War (2022)
The Silmarillion… A pleasant surprise, the cinematography is impeccable, the characters are quite well-developed, the plot seems to be a fusion of the First Age, The Silmarillion, and The Lord of the Rings Third Age stories, the pacing is pleasant if a little slow. If the series ends up telling the story of how Sauron forged the Rings of Power, it will certainly be something worth watching.
So far, overall, at least the first chapter is worthwhile
I think it’s enough to be cautiously optimistic about what the next 7 episodes might be. Once again, I have to say that I’m pleasantly surprised.. See the cast of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”; in all of his most iconic roles, from Morfydd Clark in Saint Maud to Benjamin Walker in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and beyond.
