The scar on Skye’s knee is in the shape of a smile

Scenario

Shortly before her world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley experiences increasingly horrific and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and pressures of fame, Skye is forced to confront her past. In one scene, Skye places a VOSS water bottle on the stone/marble kitchen counter and a sound similar to the sound of something plastic being placed on top is heard.

VOSS water bottles are made of glass, which is actually highlighted in the film, so the sound does not match the action shown. Skye Riley: [to Smile Entity] You’re not in control, it’s me! A very disturbing depiction of the smile phenomenon in the backdrop of the pop music scene and celebrity culture.

It also covers some deep ground about the toxic culture of being a pop star

Skye, the main character, is at the center of this horrific story that shows us how our lives are spiraling out of control. We see most of the story from Skye’s perspective, and so the film does a good job of creating empathy for the character, despite all her moral failings. In the film, Smile takes on many meanings as it also reflects the pressure of appearing in front of the camera and smiling when your mental health is at its lowest.

It’s so disturbing

Her mother, her assistant, and her fans all seem reasonable amidst the chaos, but their actions seem to become instruments of torture. Personally, I feel like Skye is going through too much and I was ultimately relieved that the film was over. If you like body horror, you’ll love this.

The film is pretty scary, but it’s more disturbing than scary
